Update: Police-involved shooting in Midwest City
MIDWEST CITY, OK – A metro police officer was forced to shoot a suspect this morning, according to Midwest City Police. It happened in a neighborhood just off of Midwest Boulevard between S.E.15th St. and S.E. 29th St.
Police were initially called out to investigate reports on an explosion. Police said a call came in from the 600 block of Lions Park Place of a possible explosion and a man acting strange.
Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said, “When the first officer arrived he was confronted by a white male who was armed with a rifle and a machete.”
Clabes said the man refused to drop his weapons and then pointed the rifle at the officer. The officer then shot the suspect.
Clabes said, “It’s pretty obvious the officer was protecting himself and the other officers at the scene.”
Police said there were several people in the home at the time of the shooting. Those people were taken in for questioning.
As for the reports of an explosion, those reports are still under investigation.
“There’s a detached garage behind the residence,” Clabes said. “It appears there was some type of explosion inside the garage.”
Police said the suspect did have burns on his torso leading them to believe he had been inside the garage when the explosion happened. Police said the suspect did not own the home.
The homeowner told police the man had been staying there. Police spent much of the day waiting on a search warrant to go inside the home.
They tell us it will likely be Tuesday before they identify a cause of the explosion. Police are also not releasing the names of the suspect or the officer at this time.
